History of Chester

Take a limo tour of Chester and we will take you to the sights of Chester and give you an insight into the history of this important City, in fact it was as important as London to the Romans. The City was originally a fortress home of the 20th Legion, where they held off an uprising by Boadicea, the town was at that time known as Deva, as you look round the City the name Deva can still be seen ie: Deva Museum. Chester was a very fine strategic outpost for the Roman Empire. Chester was invaded by the Vikings taking the the same route as the Chester Roman Legions, coming up the River Dee.

Chester, or as it was know then "Deva" was conquered by Danes and Saxons after the withdrawal of the Romans in AD400 and the City was left in a derelict state by AD900. Chester castle was built in 1070, this can be seen behind what is now Chester Crown Court - with it's pillared entrance - Chester Castle was the home of Hugh the Wolt, first Earl of Chester. The famous row of shops with two elevations that made Chester famous for shopping was also built at the same time bringing Chester to the end of the 13th Century.

The 14th Century brought Chesters famous Pagents and Mystery Plays, Henry VIII granted Chester a charter in 1541 and made Chester a Bishopric. The Amphitheatre remains and is the largest uncovered in Britain - it was only uncovered in 1929.
